Photography

pierThere are many photographic artists working in Poole and its surroundings. Many of them concentrate on coastal scenes taking advantage of Poole's location on the coast. However, there are also some high quality fine art and documentary photographers.

Professionally, most photographers in the area derive their income from commercial, portrait or wedding photography.

Unfortunately gallery space is at a premium in the area and therefore local artists find it difficult to place their work with galleries or find suitable venues for their own exhibitions. We would like to see this change and ultimately see an opportunity for a photography festival happen in the area in the future.

Public Galleries

KUBE regularly displays photography and has recently redefined its mission which should result in even more.

Commercial Galleries

Harris Interiors and Floren, located virtually next to each other in Ashley Cross both sell a mixed range of art including photography.

The Photographers Lounge in Swanage is a small gallery dedicated to photography.

Further Education Courses

The Arts University College runs a number of degree, foundation degree and short courses in photography. It also runs courses in related subjects like Photoshop. We advise you to try to check out details of the tutor and subject matter of the short courses before booking as the currency of the subject matter, and knowledge of the tutors used, is variable.

Bournemouth & Poole College offers A, AS and City & Guilds photography courses.

Bournemouth University also runs BA courses in Photography, Photomedia and Forensic Photography. The first two are, however, taught from their Salisbury campus.

Workshops

Mark Howell, a local photographer and Director of The Arts Poole, runs workshops and bespoke courses for individuals on documentary photography.
