Freeplay
About Freeplay
Freeplay organizes jamming sessions for musicians, vocalists and poets in Poole, and supports the development of local musicians and the music scene. See next section for more details. Although a separate organization, Freeplay works very closely with TAP, and together we help to link artists and musicians together.
Unlike the many open-mic nights in the area, Freeplay events encourage musicians, whether experienced or developing, to play together spontaneously.
Musicians take turns to lead instrumentals/songs and other musicians are free to join in. Sometimes a musician leads from beginning to end and at other times other musicians take over in true jamming style. There is no set musical genre - this is where folk, jazz, contemporary and world music meet. Each Freeplay experience is different and dependent on the musicians and instruments present.
Freeplay is building a community of musicians and music-lovers who are developing their musical skills and free playing. It is committed to finding opportunities for musicians to play in public and signposting to other development opportunities.
Where and when
Freeplay currently holds its regular jamming sessions in the atmospheric, medieval hall of the King Charles Inn in Thames Street in Poole Old Town, BH15 1JN.
The next Freeplay is on Tuesday 21 January from 8pm. From then onwards, Freeplay is changing format and dates, as follows:
FREEPLAY MIX: 1st Thursday of every month (exc. Jan), 9pm - 11:30pm. An “in house” music jam at The Arts Poole (TAP)'s monthly Creative Hub arts & music evenings. Meet new people, make new connections, enjoy the company of other artists and performers, be inspired, motivated and have some FUN! Entry is free for Freeplay participants. For more details about The Creative Hub click here
FREEPLAY CHILL: 3rd Sunday of every month, 7pm – 11:00pm. Experiment, learn from each other, develop as musicians, vocalists and writers, build confidence or simply chill, at this relaxed jamming session, recharging those batteries for the week ahead. Free entry.
Bring your own instrument and music. All abilities, styles, welcome. PA available and acoustics are great in this atmospheric pub. For absolute beginners, we even have a few basic percussion instruments for those just beginning their musical adventure to join in with.
For more details, see Freeplay's own web site - www.freeplaypoole.org.uk - or the TAP events page for the dates of upcoming Freeplay events.
Freeplay also seeks out opportunities for musicians to play in interesting public spaces. For example, for four Saturdays in August 2009, Freeplay put on a Busking Showcase on Poole Quay when local musicians performed on the steps in front of Hennings Wharf. This experimental project was designed to show how Poole Quay can be animated by music and to assess the reaction to such performances from musicians, passers by, businesses and residents.
